Puppy Lessons
We recommend your 1st lesson be at 4 months old, then a 2nd lesson at 5 months old. These lessons are essential to get him moving along on his training, they also help to lay a foundation for his Gun Introduction at 6 month old.

Lesson #1 ($40) at 4 months old We'll show you how to work him on live birds and teach you things that you should be doing with your pup as well as things not to do with your pup. Like; to please refrain from from using "sit" & "heal" with your pup until he is 6 months old.

Lesson # 2 ($40) at 5 months old we would like you to bring out your pup, to show you how to work on quartering in the field, using their nose to find live birds, chasing out after fly away birds, work on recall and continue working on retrieve. All of this puppy training gets these young dogs introduced to live birds at the correct time, without putting too much pressure on them as well as showing you how to keep your family pet under control without using too many commands. This is useful because most families are looking for a dual purposed dog!

*If you have purchased an Olive Hill Kennels Pup these two lessons are included with the purchase, and are required in order to receive your 2 weeks of gun introduction at 6 months old at no additional charge.

Saturday mornings, we host Open House at Olive Hill Kennels. This is a great time to stop by if you're interested in purchasing a bird dog, watch dogs run in the field, work on socializing, or run your dog in the field and get some tips on what you can work on at home as well as doing your puppy lessons.  Its a great chance to see different breeds of dogs run in the filed.  You will see dogs with all kinds of different strengths and weaknesses and how we work them through it.  Your dog is likely to be doing some of these things at some point in their training.   It is a casual first come first serve basis that gives you the opportunity to watch our trainer in action with other customers and their dogs.
When it's your turn you get the trainers undivided attention for your own lesson so whether your just starting your pup out or finishing him/her to be steady to wing & shot, we'll be happy to help you out!

Our program is generally a 6 to 8 week program designed to provide the owner with a good hunting companion. Full service upland game and waterfowl training is $252.00 per week (or $36.00 per day). We will give you a call each Friday with an update on your dogs progress and we will invite you to come out at the appropriate times to watch your dog work in field and work with you on how to handle your dog once you have them at home.
Introduction To The Gun

We feel the best time to introduce your pup to the gun is around 6-7 months. This is a fragile process that should be handled carefully. 'Gun shyness' is a man-made problem and is nearly impossible to correct.  We recommend that you get some professional help with this aspect of the training so that it is done correctly!

This is generally a 2 - 3 week process at the cost of $252 per week. We will work on handling, quartering, using their nose to find birds, chase out after fly away birds, work on recall and retrieve.  As they are chasing the fly away birds, we will start with a blank pistol, work our way up to a shotgun, then do shoot and kills right over the top of the dog.  They will learn to anticipate the loud noise as part of the fun of chasing birds.  Once this is done we recommend getting your dog out on short chukar hunts at Quail Point to start getting them some experience with you in the hunting field and ready for their full training after they are 10 months old.  We don't recommend taking your dog to the gun range as there is no association with birds and unexpected noice they don't understand.  We also don't recommend taking your dog dove hunting in the first season even after gun introduction until they have had a season of upland game or waterfowl hunting.

*If you have purchased an Olive Hill Kennels Pup, the 2-3 weeks of gun introduction are included in your purchase as long as the two puppy head start lessons have been completed.

Our obedience training is offered to most breeds of dogs, teaching them sit, stay, hear and heal.  It is typically a 30 day program.  We will call you each Friday with an update, and invite you to come out at the end of the second week to see your dogs progress and work with you on how to maintain the training once you have them home.  We will invite you out at the end of 4 weeks again to work with you on the commands and how to get the dog to respond to you.  The training program will get your dog familiar with the foundation while on leash, and give you the confidence to move forward with a dog that is under control while having fun and being a part of your family.
