- Introduction to the Gun
$300 per week
We recommend introducing your pup to the gun at around 6 or 7 m months of age. This is a fragile process that should be handled carefully. "Gun shyness" is typically a man made problem that is nearly impossible to correct. This process generally takes 2-3 weeks. Dogs will go over quartering, handling, using their nose to find birds, chasing out fly away birds, recall and retrieve. As your pup chases the fly away birds, we will start with a blank pistol, work our way up to a shotgun, then do shoot and kills right over the top of the dog. They'll learn to anticipate the loud noise as part of the fun of chasing birds. Once this is done we recommend getting your dog out on short checker hunts at Quail Point to start getting them experience with you in the hunting field and ready for their formal training at 10 months old. We don't recommend taking your dog to the gun range as there is no association with birds and the sound. We also don't recommend taking your dog dove hunting the first season, even after gun intro, until they have had a season of upland game or waterfowl hunting.
A trainer will call you every Friday, while your dog is with us, to give you an update on your dogs training and let you know when your dog is finished and ready to be picked up. Scheduling can be done through your account at olivehillkennels.com or by calling/texting (530)735-6517.
*If you purchased your pup from OHK, the 2-3 weeks of Gun Introduction are included in your purchase price, as long as you've completed the two included puppy lessons.
